Lesson 6.3
Stalls that aren't about calories
Loom walkthrough coming for this lesson. The written version below is complete.
Sometimes the client looks adherent on paper, the deficit is right, and the scale still won't move. New coaches reach for the calorie or cardio lever here. Wrong move. Work this list before you pull any lever. Pulling a lever on a stall that isn't about calories just tightens the squeeze without fixing the cause.
| # | Stall | How to spot it | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Steps quietly dropping | 4-week step average well under target. The body moves less as fatigue builds. | Leak |
| 2 | "Healthy" foods not measured | Oil "drizzled," nuts, avocado, nut butter, granola eyeballed. Ask how they portion these. | Leak |
| 3 | Liquid calories | Milk in coffee, oat lattes, smoothies, juice, sugary electrolytes, alcohol. Ask directly. | Leak |
| 4 | Weekend sleep crash | Monday weight spike that clears by Wednesday, repeating every week | Water |
| 5 | Training intensity drift | Same weights for the same reps for 4+ weeks in the log | Training |
| 6 | Menstrual cycle water | In the week or two before a period, the scale can hold flat or even rise 0.5–1 kg while she's still in a deficit, then drop sharply once her period starts. Compare the same cycle phase to the same cycle phase, not week to week. On hormonal contraception, use 4-week trends instead. | Comparison |
| 7 | Chronic stress | Scale flat, waist still dropping, photos puffy, stress in the form | Water |
| 8 | Portion creep | Scoops and servings slowly grow over 4–6 weeks. An audit week (weigh and photograph every meal for 5 days) shows it. | Leak |
| 9 | Diet fatigue nibbles | "Just one" bites, a colleague's cake, a few chips. Ask: "What did you eat this week that wasn't on the plan?" | Leak |
| 10 | Water from new training | New block or big volume jump, lifts climbing, scale holding for 2–3 weeks | Training |
| 11 | Sodium swings | A restaurant or salty meal shows up as a spike 24–48 hours later | Water |
What to do by type
| Type | What's really happening | The move |
|---|---|---|
| Leak (1, 2, 3, 8, 9) | An adherence problem disguised as a stall | Coach the missing piece, run an audit week, tighten the weak spot. Don't pull a lever. Fix the leak. |
| Water (4, 7, 11) | Water is hiding real fat loss | Hold the plan, fix the cause (sleep, stress, salt) and let it clear over 5–10 days |
| Training (5, 10) | The stimulus has flattened, or new training is holding water | Restore progressive overload (5), or hold and wait 2–3 weeks (10) |
| Comparison (6) | You're comparing the wrong weeks | Compare same phase to same phase, reassure the client, hold |
