Module 1: Coaching Philosophy & Understanding Your Demographic

Module 1

Loom walkthrough coming for this lesson. The written version below is complete.

Coaching isn't about how well you write a program, how perfect the nutrition plan is, or how fancy your app is. It's about getting real results for real people with real lives, and that's a completely different skill.

This module sets the lens for everything else in the course. Every later module (intake, nutrition, training, check-ins, adjustments, communication) runs through the ideas here. If you only take one module seriously, make it this one.

By the end of it you should be able to:

  • Describe who your Gen Pop client actually is, and why your life is not their life
  • Spot the four client types that walk through the door, and what each one needs from you
  • Treat every guideline in this course as a starting point, not a rule
  • Run the one decision every coach makes every week: are they progressing, and are they happy?
  • Tell the difference between being flexible and being soft
  • Recognise a real result, and the two results that only look like one

Five principles carry this whole course. You'll see them in every module. Keep coming back to them:

  1. Their reality is reality. Physical, emotional and social empathy. Your life is not their life, so build around the one they actually have.
  2. Practicality over perfection. Adherence is our north star. The plan they'll do beats the plan that's optimal on paper.
  3. There's more than one way to skin a cat. There is a perfect plan: it's the one this person can actually follow. That will look different for every client.
  4. Coaching is a dialogue, not a monologue. It's a relationship, not a dictatorship. Listen first, then decide together.
  5. In the absence of quality, there is volume. Lifting is a skill. Reps and practice get a client 90% of the way while their technique and effort catch up (Module 4).
