Off-plan meals, alcohol and travel
Clients have lives: weddings, work dinners, a friend's 30th, Sunday lunch with the parents. Our job isn't to make them say no. It's to make those events fit inside the week without wiping out the deficit. Coach them toward "yes, and here's how."
The off-plan day
Bank calories earlier in the day so the evening meal fits:
- Take the carbs and fats out of breakfast and lunch (e.g. chicken, rice and veg becomes chicken and veg)
- Drop the carb snacks
- Keep the day mostly lean protein, so they're full and protein is covered
- Dinner is the meal out, enjoyed without tracking
Set this up before the first event: "When you've got a dinner coming up, tell me and I'll send you the off-plan day."
Eating out
They should be able to walk into any restaurant and order in 30 seconds:
- Protein-led: steak, chicken, grilled fish. Aim for a fist of protein.
- Veg on the side, not creamed.
- Go easy on fried food, cheesy pizza and creamy pasta, the calorie-dense stuff with little protein.
Alcohol: the spillover is the problem
Five drinks is about 500 kcal. Annoying, not catastrophic. The real damage is what comes after: the late-night burger, the greasy breakfast, the hangover snacks. That can add up to thousands of calories and wipe out the week.
- Lower-calorie choices: spirits with soda or diet mixers (about 80–100 kcal each). Cocktails can run 300–400.
- Before: bank calories through the day, and eat protein before drinking.
- After: straight back on plan the next morning.
"The drinks themselves are fine. Watch what happens after: the late-night food and the next day. Get straight back on plan tomorrow morning."
After any event: return to plan, never compensate
No slashing calories, no extra cardio, no skipped meals the next day. Compensating feeds the binge-restrict cycle we want to keep clients out of. And the scale spike after a big meal is water, salt, glycogen and food still in the gut. It isn't fat. It settles in 2–3 days.
Holidays
Set low expectations and keep it low stress:
- No tracking. Protein and some fruit or veg at every meal.
- Eat slowly, stop at about 80% full, enjoy the local food and drinks.
- Keep moving: daily walks, and 2–3 short sessions if possible.
- Expect a scale bump from travel, salt and carbs. It usually settles within 1–2 weeks.
- On return, go straight back to the plan. No cutting calories to "undo" the holiday.
