Lesson 3.8

From cut to build: the reverse

Loom walkthrough coming for this lesson. The written version below is complete.

Clients plan for the fat loss. Nobody plans for the build. It isn't part of their mental model when they sign up, so when the cut ends there's no picture in their head of what comes next. This is the phase most likely to lose them, and the roadmap is how you fix it: pre-frame the build from the very first week.

Is it time? Three signals, read together

SignalWhat you're looking for
Transformation achievedClear, visual progress against the goal, usually one long cut or two medium cuts with a break between
Performance and energyGym numbers, recovery and energy trending the way you'd expect from someone who's had enough deficit
Diet fatigue, compoundingDisengaged check-ins, stalled numbers, poor recovery, low mood, snacking, poor sleep, lots of food noise

Look for these compounding week after week, never off one bad week.

The calorie steps

Skip the maintenance calculator here. Metabolism is skewed at the end of a cut.

  1. Equalise. If they're on high and low days, set every day to the same number.
  2. First bump. Add 200–300 kcal, mostly carbs.
  3. Aim for 0.25–0.5% bodyweight gained per week. Same for men and women, but women are often more scale-sensitive, so lean slower with more education.
  4. Too fast? Hold. If weight climbs faster than that after the first 2 weeks, hold for a week before adding more.
  5. Stalled? Add small. 150–200 kcal from carbs around training first, fats later.

The build arc

Push until definition starts to blur. Visuals lead, not the calendar. Around month 4–5 the physique starts to soften. That's a caution, not an alarm: hold, and coach them through the discomfort. As a watch-point, they should stay roughly 5–6 kg from shredded. Blurry is expected. Out of hand isn't.

Coaching them through it

Predict it before it happens. The scale bump in weeks 1–2 is water and glycogen, not fat. Tell them before the first increase.

When they sayTry
"The scale jumped again and I'm panicking I'm getting fluffy.""Totally get it. That's your muscles filling back up with glycogen from the food, which helps your training. It's not fat."
"I'm never hungry anymore and forcing food down feels sluggish.""Normal. You've been hungry a long time, so feeling full feels foreign. To grow and get your metabolism working better, we need to eat more than feels natural."
"I hate how I look. Can we just go back to cutting?""If we pull the pin now, we end up losing the same 5 kg every year and never actually progressing. This feeling is normal. Discomfort is where we grow."

Give them a scorecard that isn't the scale: energy, sleep quality, training loads and reps, recovery between sessions, hunger returning to normal, mood and focus. Fuel and performance language beats scale language, every time.
